Lemnos lies in the north-eastern part of theAegean Sea between Mount Athos and the islands of Samothrace and Lesvos. It is the eighth largest Greek island and has a long coastline uniquely shaped with numerous small and large bays. Myrina is the island's capital town of about 6,000 inhabitants. It has a centuries-long history and is the main port as well as the commercial and tourist centre of the island. On the road from Myrina to Kornos in the middle of a verdant area, there are the Therma hot springs. The springs have been used since antiquity and are said to have therapeutic properties.
Archaelogical excavations show that the island has been inhabited since the mid-Neolithic period. Lemnos was considered by the ancient Greeks as the island of Hephaestos, the God of fire. The low vegetation, the volcanic rocky formations, the terraced hillsides, the stone farmhouses, the windmills and the tiny country churches give the island a unique, austere beauty. Many islanders are farmers, fishermen and seamen while increased numbers are also engaged in trade, tourism and services. Among the distinct local products are included the renowed wine and ouzo, the sheep's cheese, the traditional pasta, the pure thyme honey as well as the fresh fish and meat.
THE ISLAND OF AGHIOS EFSTRATIOS
Located between the islands of Lesvos and Lemnos, the island of Aghios Efstratios offers a magical experience to visitors through its simplicity and tranquility. Well maintained houses surrounded by vineyards and fruit trees characterize the unique settlement and harbour of the island, while quaint bays, chapels and caves underline the exceptional simplicity of the land. The few inhabitants are mainly cattle breeders, cheese makers and fishermen, also toiling the not-very-fertile earth.
