The area of Aghios Nicholaos occupies one of the most beautiful spots of Crete, combining “sea and mountain” with the Merabelo Gulf and the surrounding mountain masses.
The diversity of the landscape lends the municipality of Aghios Nicholaos and the comprising settlements a particular interest and beauty. Quaint villages and head villages, monuments that evidence a 6000-year-long human presence in the area, fossils from way back, beautify the land and reveal its history and culture.
Limni (Lake) is the gem of the town. Legend wants Athena and Artemis washing their hair in its waters. A stroll around the shops of Aghios Nicholaos is always a pleasant experience. There are cafeterias, quaint cafes and eateries popular with the locals for drinking rake (local spirit). A multitude of sport facilities offer the opportunity to athletes, sport fans and amateurs, locals and visitors, to enjoy a variety of sports. Since time immemorial, the locals based their diet on the products of their land, such as greens, legumes, meat, fish, the awarded local honey and olive oil of excellent qualitycheese and wine, often served in creative combinations with interesting results. The Marina of Aghios Nicholaos is a recent addition to the local tourist infrastructure that enhances and lends another dimension to the area’s tourist product.
LATO
A Dorian city, one of the best known and best preserved ancient cities on Crete. Built on a fort with unique view, it flourished from the 4th through the 2nd century BC. It is located at three kilometers from Kritsa.
SPINALONGA
It is the best known islet of Crete, a rock and a fortress on the northwestern mouth of the Elounda lagoon. The castle was built during the Venetian occupation. The public buildings, the houses and the surrounding walls – currently undergoing repair – give the opportunity to visitors to relive the history of the islet.
PANAGIA KERA
It is the most famous Byzantine monument on Crete (13th to 14th century) located at one kilometer east of Kritsa.
AGHIOS NICHOLAOS CHURCH
At the north of the town, on the top of a small peninsula lies the church of Aghios Nicholaos, a typical sample of early Byzantine architecture (7th to 9th century).
ELOUNDA
Resort of international fame north of the town of Aghios Nicholaos, with lacy coastline, tranquil beaches, crystal-clear waters, serene and beautiful environment. It lies at 10 kilometres from the town of Aghios Nicholaos.
KRITSA
Kritsa is a special community of people with its very own culture, tradition and dialect. Human presence has been uninterrupted in Krtisa at least since the late Minoan era (1600-1100 BC).
KALO CHORIO
It has settlements dating back to the Neolithic era and the Minoan years. The crystal clear beaches of Kalo Chorio offer unforgettable days of fun and relaxation.
