ECOTOURISM
The region’s rare biotopes and wetlands are of major importance, featuring a wide range of natural habitats, unusual flora and fauna. One of Greece's largest wetlands is located on Lesvos, while the wetlands of Hortarolimni on Lemnos and Mykali on Samos are home to rare bird species, the same as the precipitous coastal rocks of Aghios Eustratios.
GEOTOURISM
Dating back some 25 million years, the Petrified Forest of Lesvos attracts thousands of international visitors each year. The Olymbi Cave on Chios is one of the best known in Greece.
SPA TOURISM
Volcanic activity in the area around Lesvos has endowed the island with rich thermal spas, while important thermal springs are also found on Ikaria, Lemnos and Chios.
AGROTOURISM
Rich in agricultural and traditional life, the region is ideal for agrotourism. Most of the units are found on Northern Lesvos (Petra - Anaxos), in Kambos and the "Mastichohoria" (mastic villages) of Chios and at Marathokambos on Samos.
GOURMET TOURISM
The olive oil and ouzo of Lesvos are a trademark of Greek taste. Famous since antiquity, the muscat wine of Samos, as well as the wine of Lemnos, hold a special position in wine-making. The unique mastic of Chios is known for its fragrance, healing properties and many uses in perfumery, pharmaceutics, distillery and confectionery.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOURISM
The archeological site of Poliochni, the Sanctuary of the Kabeiroi and the Hephaesteia on Lemnos, Ancient Antissa, the Sanctuary of Mesi and the Roman Aqueduct on Lesvos, Emborio on Chios, Heraios, the Roman Baths, and the Eupalinion Tunnel on Samos, the castles of Myrina, Mytilene, Mithymna and Sigri, as well as the medieval villages of Chios, are just some of the sites.
RELIGIOUS TOURISM
Tens of monasteries, churches and chapels of historical importance are scattered throughout the region, adding a unique dimension to the area’s spiritual identity.
SPORT TOURISM
The region’s morphology offers a unique opportunity for outdoor activity, such as rock climbing, sailing, windsurfing, hiking, diving and para-gliding. For water-sport fans there is sailing, windsurfing and diving.
